NEW DELHI — Few topics in the global health agenda are as contentious as access to affordable medicines and medical care, and expectedly, divergent views permeated the discussions at a high-level conference in New Delhi, India last week. But if there is one thing that the three-day meet made amply clear, it was this: access to affordable healthcare has emerged as a global problem, and an emerging coalition of the like-minded, cutting across the developed and developing countries, is determined to have their voices heard in international policy circles on the issue.

Global Fund Chooses Former UK Banker Peter Sands As New Director

As Global Fund Board Meets To Choose New Director, Sands Seeks To Reinstate Candidacy

Days after withdrawing from consideration to be the next director of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the UK’s Peter Sands has asked to be reinstated. The actions come as the Fund’s Board gathers this week to choose among the final candidates for head of the international health funding organisation based in Geneva.

New MPP-Gilead License For HIV Treatment

The Medicines Patent Pool today announced a new licence with Gilead Sciences for a medicine which in combination with others would offer a once-daily, single-tablet HIV treatment.

G20: 19 Against 1 On Climate Change; Affordable Antimicrobials, Vaccines Planned

The G20 governments against some odds passed a joint communique today, but had to accept differences on climate and in one point also on free trade. The US delegation remained firm in their decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement and continue to support conventional energy resources, instead of renewable ones. German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her press conference explained that there was a clear division in the climate chapter of the G20 2017 Declaration.

G20 Reaches Agreement Against Terrorism, Appears To Target Encryption

At the G20 meeting in Hamburg today, the German hosts chose a retreat over the fight against terrorism as a warm-up, before turning to the controversial topics of free trade and climate change. Governments were very much in agreement when it comes to one thing: Internet platform providers must do more to fight radicalization and the use of the internet by terrorists.
