Motion Picture Association of America head Dan Glickman is moving from protecting intellectual property rights to protecting the rights of displaced people worldwide. Glickman announced today he will leave his position as chairman and CEO of the MPAA on 1 April. Glickman will make the leap to become president of Refugees International, an advocacy organisation for refugees worldwide. Glickman is no stranger to broad career changes, having come to the movie industry after serving as President Clinton’s agriculture secretary. Glickman had previously stated he would not seek renewal of his contract in September 2010.

Bob Pisano, MPAA president and chief operating officer since 2005, will become interim CEO, and the search for Glickman’s replacement continues. Pisano came to MPAA after heading the Screen Actors Guild, and serving at several major movie production companies.

Glickman replaced the vitriolic Jack Valenti in 2004.

The full press release is on the MPAA website, here.
