Position: Associate Editor

Organisation: Intellectual Property Watch

Closing date: 19 August 2005

Responsibilities:

The Associate Editor provides support to the Editor-in-Chief. The Associate Editor’s primary responsibility is to assist the Editor-in-Chief in writing and editing stories and features for IP-Watch reporting and to oversee publication and distribution. S/he helps the Editor-in-Chief in carrying out research, compile data and check facts for articles. The Associate Editor maintains the website, oversees web content, organizes in particular the translations of IP-Watch reporting, is responsible for maintaining several databases and ensures the regular distribution of IP-Watch reporting (hard copy and on-line). The Associate Editor also provides assistance in administrative matters (including assisting the Editor-in-Chief in fundraising activities, organizing meetings and travel abroad, collaborating with contributors and sources around the world). S/he is a flexible, self-motivated and dynamic person with a proven ability to take initiative and work with minimum supervision in a very small team.

Qualifications

* Minimum of 5 years of extensive writing experience (in journalism or policy analysis) and excellent copyediting skills
* Master’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in international journalism, international relations, public policy, development policy, or international law
* Prior experience in publishing regular reports and/or news services
* Prior experience of working in the non-profit sector
* Experience in retrieving data from the web and using IT tools, including knowledge of graphic/web design and maintenance
* Excellent organizational skills
* High professional standards and presentation skills
* Reliable, dynamic and able to work independently and under pressure when meeting tight deadlines
* Strong interest in the fields of intellectual property and international trade
* Ability and willingness to be part of a very small team in a new and rapidly evolving organisation
* Candidates from developing countries are particularly encouraged to apply
* Valid Swiss working permit will be required
* English essential, French and Spanish strong assets

Salary: CHF60,000 – CHF85,000 commensurate with experience.

Employment rate: full time

Start date: As soon as possible
