APBREBES was founded in 2009 by seven civil society organisations from both developing and developed countries: the Berne Declaration (Switzerland), the Center for International Environmental Law (USA), the Community Technology Development Trust (Zimbabwe), the Development Fund (Norway), the Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (Nepal), the Southeast Asia Regional Initiative for Community Empowerment (Philippines), and the Third World Network (Malaysia). The organisation follows in particular the activities and decisions of the Geneva-based International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), and aims at the recognition and taking into account of human rights and farmers’ rights, and the sustainable management of agricultural diversity in those activities and decisions, according to its website.
