The 1 March election will be the fourth attempt for one of the candidates to get the required three quarter majority needed to win the seat. Previous elections were held in February, December, and October; in December Brimelow was given an extended mandate to remain in office until 31 December if necessary. Her original term was set to end 1 July. The candidates are: Susanne Ǻs Sivborg, director general of the Swedish Patent Office; Benoît Battistelli, director general of the French Patent Office, and Roland Grossenbacher, director of the Swiss Patent Office.
