Dates Set For WIPO Audiovisual Treaty Negotiation In Beijing

The dates have been set for this year’s high-level negotiation for a treaty on audiovisual performances at the World Intellectual Property Organization.
According to the WIPO website , the diplomatic conference will take place from 20-26 June in Beijing. The proposed treaty under consideration and rules of procedure for the conference are available among the event documents.
The draft treaty leapt forward in the past year after being stalled for 11 years, when a 2000 diplomatic conference stalled over differences that now appear to have been resolved (IPW, WIPO, 2 December 2011 ). There are still possible differences to be worked out in the lead-up to the diplomatic conference.
The WIPO calendar leading up to the AV treaty negotiation is noticeably empty so far. It was noted at the last meeting of the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) in November-December that the committee’s next meeting in 2012 would likely take place after the AV treaty negotiation in order not to distract from progress there.
