In the face of a severe food shortage, Kenya’s Cabinet has approved imports of genetically modified maize, though it has drawn the line on use of GM maize as seeds, a regional newspaper reports.

The move makes Kenya the first country in the region to allow such agricultural products for human consumption. Biotech crops are often hailed on one hand as lifesaving in the face of a rapidly changing planet, and on the other as irreparably destructive to traditional smallholder agricultural practice and independence. Tanzania has begun moving toward acceptance of GM cotton, the East African reports.
